Scholarship

The Kavi Santokh Singh Ji Scholarship will be awarded to the applicant that writes the best poem on the Shaheedi (martyrdom) of Shaheed Bhai Jaswant Singh Ji Khalra.

The following components must be included in your submission:

  1. The Poem

Points will be awarded for historical accuracy, creativity, poetic and literary devices used, references to historical events, texts, and/or people, double meanings of words and phrases, structure of the poem, and the ability to invoke emotion in the reader. Applicants are encouraged to share Bhai Jaswant Singh Ji’s inspiration and mission leading up to their Shaheedi, their Shaheedi itself, and their legacy.

  1. Short Essay

This is your opportunity to describe the unique components of your poem. As outlined above, these include poetic and literary devices used, references to historical events, texts, and/or people, double meanings of words and phrases, and structure of the poem.

FORMAT

Submissions must be a maximum of 10 pages (5 pages for the poem, 5 pages for the description) with standard margins. Size 12 Arial or Times New Roman font must be used. Please note that applicants will be judged on the quality of their submission and not on the length of their submission. A longer poem does not mean that it is a better poem. Your submission may be in either Gurmukhi or English.

Any form of plagiarism will result in your submission being disqualified.

ELIGIBILITY

This scholarship is open to undergraduate and graduate students currently attending an Ontario based university or college. Grade 12 students who will be attending a post-secondary institution starting in September 2022 are also eligible. International students who currently attend a school in Ontario are likewise encouraged to apply.

The Sant Gurbachan Singh Ji Scholarship ($5,000) will be awarded to the applicant who provides the most comprehensive arth (meanings) and background of the following Shabad:

ਸੂਹੀ ਮਹਲਾ ੫ ॥
ਸੰਤਾ ਕੇ ਕਾਰਜਿ ਆਪਿ ਖਲੋਇਆ ਹਰਿ ਕੰਮੁ ਕਰਾਵਣਿ ਆਇਆ ਰਾਮ ॥

Applicants will be judged for the meaning(s) and insight that they provide into the Shabad. In addition, applicants will be awarded points for the overall grammar, structure, and organization of their submission.
